Alcohol will be permitted at Florida State University only in those settings which:

  1. Comply with state and federal laws, municipal county ordinances, and this policy;
  2. Present minimum low health and safety risks; and
  3. In no way inhibit the full participation of those who choose not to drink alcohol.

No individual under the legal drinking age (minimum of 21 years of age) may serve, sell, consume or possess alcohol on university properties, except to the extent allowed by law within licensed premises or designated areas of the university.

No individual may serve or otherwise provide alcohol to persons under the legal drinking age.

The Sale of Alcohol:

The sale of alcohol on campus must be approved by the President or his or her designee. Although the President or his designee may approve the sale of alcohol on campus, only the Division of Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco can issue the permit required to sell alcohol in the State of Florida.

Laws and Regulations:

All members of the campus community (students, faculty, staff, alumni, and guests) must adhere to all applicable state and local laws and university regulations related to the sale and use of alcohol.

Any organization found not to be in compliance with the university alcohol policy at their event may be subject to university disciplinary action and may forfeit its right to any fee support from the university.

Parent Notification Policy

In the fall of 2000, the Board of Regents of the State University System of Florida instructed each University to include provisions for parent notification of dependent students under the age of 21 if the student is found to be in violation of University policies regarding alcohol and other drugs. The purpose of the Parent Notification Policy at the Florida State University is to comply with the Board of Regents’ instructions and to promote the health and well being of students. This policy will provide parents an opportunity to partner with their student and the University to address behaviors that could place students at risk of harming themselves or others.

Florida State University will notify parents or guardians of dependent students, defined in F.S. 228.093, when the student is found responsible for violating University alcohol or other drug policies:

When is Parent Notification necessary?

Parents of Florida State University students will be immediately notified of a student's involvement with alcohol and other drug violations under the following circumstances:

  1. A student has been transported to the hospital or required residence hall staff assistance due to their consumption of alcohol and/or other drugs.
  2. A student under the age of 18 is allegedly involved in an alcohol or other drug incident.

What is the "Parent Notification Letter"?

In situations where students (18 or older) have been found responsible for a violation of the Florida State University alcohol or other drug policy, students will be required to complete an action statement explaining the nature of the situation and circumstances that led to the violation. This statement will be maintained in the student's disciplinary file for a period of 12 months. If the student is found responsible for a subsequent violation of the alcohol and other drug policy, a copy of this statement will be sent home along with official notification of the University.
