Faculty
and staff can influence student behaviors.
A direct relationship has been proven between alcohol
consumption and academic
success. Studies have shown that students who drink excessively
tend to miss more classes, get behind in school work, and drop
out of courses or the university. Also, students' academic performance
and GPA are inversely related to the number of drinks consumed
per week. Unfortunately, campus and community norms and traditions
may encourage high-risk use of alcohol. These perceived norms lead
to a "party school" image which negatively influences
the academic reputation of an institution.
Studies have shown a positive correlation between high levels
of faculty/staff/student interaction. Desirable outcomes, such
as increased time devoted to course work and avoidance of high-risk
social behaviors, were found.
Help reduce high-risk drinking
among FSU students:
- Take attendance at each class.
- Give exams on Thursdays and Fridays.
- Invite a health educator
from Thagard Student Health Center
to speak to one of your classes if you are unable to hold the
class.
- Avoid meeting with students at
bars.
- Integrate information on alcohol
and related cultural issues into instructional presentations,
meetings, and the classroom.
- Recognize and respond to students'
problem behaviors.
The University Counseling Center (850/644-2003) and
the Health Promotion department at Thagard Student Health Center
(850/644-8871)
can provide advice to faculty and professional intervention
for students in need.
- Also, please see the information
on how
to refer
a troubled student.
