Smart Choices Schedule All classes will be held in the Thagard 3rd floor HERS
Conference Room. Spring 2009
Program philosophy: The SMART Choices course is one of Florida State University's Healthy Campus 2010 initiatives to engage students in maintaining overall health and wellness. SMART Choices classes are conducted in a casual, non-judgemental atmosphere that is conducive to open discussion. Students' opinions and attitudes are always valued. Rather than trying to change a student's behavior in a single intervention, our objective is to introduce the student to a process of self-examination that may lead to behvior change. Procedure: • Check in at the Thagard Student Health Center reception desk located on the first floor, then pay for the class at the first floor cashier. The class fee is $75. Payment can be made by cash, check, FSU Card or credit card. • Take your payment receipt back to Thagard's reception desk and sign up for the next available class. Class times and locations can vary from semester to semester. • The SMART Choices course is provided in 2 two-hour sessions and an interactive online program. You must attend both sessions and complete required assignments to receive credit and avoid holds on class registration or FSU transcripts. • An additional $25 fee will be assessed to students under the following circumstances: ° Student fails to attend the SMART Choices class he or she registered for and doesn't reschedule at least 24 hours in advance. ° Student does not complete class requirements and must repeat the course in order to receive credit. If you are unable to attend the class you signed up for, please visit Thagard Student Health Center to reschedule at least 24 hours in advance to avoid paying the $25 fee. Course Content: • Legal aspects of alcohol and other drug use on campus and in the community. • Physical effects; academic, social and financial consequences. • Stages of addiction and characteristics of the addictive personality. • How alcohol affects interpersonal and family relationships. • Stress reduction, recreation and healthy leisure activites. • Values clarification and personal responsibility.
