Tips on Nurturing the Self
by Margaret Ashmore, LCSW

You may have been following your nutrional plan and giving your body the necessary vitamins and nutrients. You might even be stretching your muscles and building your strength. All positive steps to a healthier you. But while food, water and sleep are our most basic requirements for good health nurturing the self is also necessary to our growth.

Creating time to give to ourselves can reduce stress, re-energize our bodies and improve our relationships. Looking back through your week notice in what ways you have nurtured yourself. Whether it is slowing down and taking a few minutes for yourself each day or treating yourself to a weekend spa. Nurturing yourself is an important goal in maintaining good health.

Below is a list of ways to self nurture. Try some of the following or create your own list. Place your list by your bed and each night check off what you have done to give to yourself. Make loving yourself a lifelong habit.

Ways to Nuture the Self:

  • read for pleasure
  • take a relaxing walk
  • meditation or prayer
  • listen to music
  • take a nap
  • draw, paint or make crafts
  • take piano or voice lessons
  • get a massage
