Alcohol & Other Drugs
Goal 1: Reduce high risk drinking and alcohol and drug related harm to FSU students through a comprehensive approach to change the culture of drinking on our campus and within the community.
Objective 1: Reduce the proportion of college students who engage in high risk drinking (5 or more drinks) to 38% from 40.6%.
Objective 2: Decrease % of students who drive impaired to 30.1% from 34.1%
Objective 3: Increase % of students who reports always using a designated driver to 51% from 47%
Objective 4: Decrease the number of students who drive after drinking 5 drinks or more drinks to 5.0% from 7.0%
Goal 2: Provide advising, training & development that empowers, encourages and educates the students involved with the peer education program
Tobacco Use
Goal: Decrease the prevalence of smoking among students, faculty and staff
Objective 1: Increase the % of students that receive information on tobacco use prevention for 22.3% (NCHA, 2008) to 25.6% in 2009.
Administer Smoking Policy Surveys to determine level of support for policy change
Increase awareness of Breathe Easy and Smoking Cessation Programs with Great American Smoke-Out & Kick Butts Day Events
Objective 2: Decrease the % of students that smoke cigarettes within the last 30 days from 17.5% (NCHA, 2008) to 14.5% in 2009.
Revise the Smoking Cessation Intake form in order to expand quality and content of the program evaluation
Development and implementation of a Follow-up Evaluation Survey
Objective 3: Increase student participation in the Smoking Cessation Program from 41 in 2007-2008 to 61 in 2008-2009
Increase the number of Smoking Cessation Facilitators from 2 to 3
Increase the Awareness of the Smoking Cessation Program through marketing campaigns
Increase the number of announcements on the website
Objective 4: Increase the number of Faculty and staff that participate in the Smoking Cessation Program from 25 in 2007-2008 to 50 in 2008-2009.
Develop and distribute a policy needs assessment survey for faculty and staff
Make personal contact with building and administrative contacts in each of the academic departments to increase awareness and recruit participation.
Objective 5: Increase the number of departments and/or buildings that participate in the Breathe Easy Program from 46 in 2008 to 69 in 2009 (50% improvement)
Make presentations to administrative units to recruit participation
Utilize administration of the Policy Survey as an opportunity to increase awareness and recruit participation.
Sexual Health & Minority Health
Goal: Decrease STI and HIV infection among FSU at risk student populations
Objective 1: Increase condom use among at risk populations at FSU (MSM, Hispanic and African Americans) by 5% (from 25% in African Americans; 36% in Hispanic/Latino)
Develop a communication plan/campaign for dissemination of information on initiatives /condom usage among at risk populations(using Social Marketing strategies)
Conduct focus groups with identified at risk populations to carry out situational market analysis (identify best message, channel, benefits & barriers of behavior, etc)
Identify communication campaign strategy & additional initiatives
Develop posters in exam rooms and around campus regarding STD prevention (condom usage)
Provide confidence building training (evidenced-based program) for at risk populations about use of condoms
Conduct a series of focus groups w/@ risk populations (MSM, Hispanic and African American)
Objective 2: Increase HIV testing and counseling among at risk populations at FSU (Hispanic, MSM)
Conduct HIV awareness events targeting at risk populations (October 15th – Hispanic testing day, December 1st – World AIDS Day, February 7th – African American testing day & June 27th - National Testing day
Objective 3: Increase condom usage of students seen for HIV testing and counseling in the HIV Clinic.
Provide pre and post HIV test counseling and education, encouraging condom use.
Increase staffing to include Peer HIV Counselors
Provide in-service for employees/staff on HIV testing, STD prevention and intervention activities
Objective 4: Identify areas of health concern among minority student populations at FSU through qualitative and quantitative efforts.
Conduct quarterly Minority Health Roundtable meetings to gather formative data on student areas of concern.
Conduct focus groups with identified at risk populations to gather formative data on student areas of concern.
Identify health needs & concerns, perceptions, etc among individual student organizations
Identify effective strategies for reducing health disparities among individual student organizations
Nutrition & Physical Activity
Goal 1: Increase healthy eating and physical activity behaviors among college students.
Objective 1: Increase the % of students who receive nutrition information from 24% (2008 NCHA) to 26% in 2009.
Objective 2: Increase the % of students who participate in moderate physical activity for at least 30 minutes per day, 3 days per week from 43% (2008 NCHA) to 46% in 2009.
Objective 3: Increase the % of students who consume at least 3 servings of fruits and vegetables per day from 30% (2008 NCHA) to 33% in 2009.
Provide medical nutrition therapy to students for eating disorders, GI disease, IBS, Crohn’s Disease, Celiac Sprue, insulin dependent diabetes, etc.
Increase the number of small group nutrition workshops provided weekly at Thagard to address: weight loss, general nutrition, healthy eating, high cholesterol , fatigue, diabetes, PCOS & sports nutrition
Provide nutrition/lifestyle/physical fitness education to students through dining facility locations, class presentations, Residence Halls and organizations
Continue data collection of nutrition clinic patients including behavior & perception data for students seen on a regular basis
Goal 2: Increase the opportunity for students to make healthy food choices on FSU’s campus.
Objective 1: Conduct focus groups to identify student’s interest in purchasing fruits & vegetables on campus (farmers market, healthy vending).
Continue positive working relationship with Seminole Dining on campus
Objective 2: Include second location for “healthy” vending machine on campus
