What do the test results mean?

HIV is the virus that causes AIDS.

“Negative” Test Result

  No HIV antibodies have been found, which can mean one of two things:
   
  • You do not have HIV
    OR
  • You have HIV but you have been infected recently and your body has not yet developed the antibodies we test for. You can still infect other people with HIV.
     
“Positive” test Result
  HIV antibodies have been found, which means:
   
  • You have HIV, and can pass the virus on to other people even if you don’t have symptoms.
    AND
  • You may or may not have AIDS. HIV may be causing damage to your immune system, and a medical evaluation is necessary.
