FAQ About HIV Testing

How long does it take to get the results back?
For blood tests, results typically come back in three business days.

How accurate are the results of an HIV test?
The accuracy of the test depends upon a patient’s last possible exposure to the virus. If a person has been infected in the past 3 months it is possible for them to test negative for HIV antibodies, but actually be HIV-positive. For this reason your counselor will establish a baseline and may recommend you follow up with another test when your 3 month window period closes. If a person is HIV-positive and has developed antibodies, the tests we run will confirm that.

I’ve never had intercourse, only oral sex. Should I still get tested?
Yes. HIV can be transmitted through oral sex, so even if you’ve never had intercourse you could possibly contract the virus. If you’re engaging in oral sex, using a latex condom or a dental dam can protect you by preventing the exchange of body fluids that carry HIV. Both types of condom are available for free at Thagard.

Will the University find out my status if my test comes back positive?
No. Nobody will know your status. A positive result may be reported to the health department for statistics, but your name WILL NOT. Additionally, HIV is a protected status in the University’s non-discrimination policy.

Do you offer any test that doesn’t require a blood sample?

Thagard offers OraQuick for $45, by appointment only. We also partner with BBC to offer OraSure at no charge. These tests are offered twice a month. Call Thagard's Health Promotion department at 644-8871 for dates and times.

I can’t afford condoms, but I want to protect myself. Does Thagard give them away for free?
Yes! Condoms are available in the first floor waiting area and also at the HIV clinic.
