Thanks for your interest in the Florida State University First Responder Unit.

The FRU is staffed entirely by student volunteers. While it is not necessary that students be in pursuit of health-related degrees or careers in order to join, students should share our interest in the health and welfare of the campus population and be willing to commit to a considerable amount of training and activity outside of class.

Membership in the FRU requires that individuals successfully complete the following steps:

  1. First, students must obtain certification in Basic Life Support. Courses that will enable students to meet this requirement are offered at FSU and throughout the local community.
  2. Next, enroll in and complete the enhanced First Responder class offered through Thagard Student Health Center. This class entails approximately one semester of training in emergency response, assessment and care skills, and the certification you receive will allow you to pursue more advanced training toward becoming an Emergency Medical Technician or Paramedic.
  3. After completion of the First Responder training, students are asked to commit to at least one academic year of service. The service you provide can be recorded as ServScript volunteer hours on your transcript, and most FRU members log between 60 and 70 hours of service each semester.

The First Responder program demands hard work and dedication, but the experience is truly rewarding for those with a desire to make a difference in the campus community.
