HIV Clinic

The TSHC HIV Clinic provides HIV testing and information on preventing HIV. TSHC offers three forms of testing. OraQuick Advance is a rapid HIV test that uses oral fluids, takes 20 to 40 minutes to show test results, and costs $45. The HIV Blood test is an HIV test that uses blood, takes 2 to 3 days for results, and costs $25. FREE testing is offered through our community-based partner (Shisa, Inc.). These tests take 2 weeks to get results and are only available by appointment.

An appointment can be made by calling 644-8871 or 644-4567.

Travel Clinic

Located on the second floor in the Gold Clinic, the TSHC foreign travel clinic provides consultations and immunizations.  Students or FSU employees traveling abroad can make appointments prior to leaving and TSHC clinicians will provide information as to what types of immunizations are necessary for travel destinations.  We have most vaccinations in-stock.  In the rare case that we don't have a vaccination on-site, we will order it and they usually only take one day to arrive.  During consultations, the clinician will provide information on any diseases or conditions that are prevalent in the area and make recommendations on precautions to take to keep safe.  Our clinicians also will give advice on general travel preparations.  To make an appointment, call 644-4567.

Smoking Cessation Program

Help is available for anyone who would like to quit smoking through the Smoking Cessation Program at Thagard Student Health Center. Designed to significantly reduce smoking and tobacco use rates, a one-on-one smoking cessation program was developed at FSU. By using proven intervention techniques, web-based cessation programs, and by providing support and encouragement, smoking cessation facilitators work with those who wish to quit smoking. Because of the limited funding, the cessation aids will be provided on a first come, first served basis. The smoking cessation program, however, is not dependent upon the availability of cessation aids and cessation facilitators are available year round. Contact Kevin Frentz at (850) 645-4973 for more information.

Flu Vaccinations

Thagard Student Health Center runs an annual fall flu campaign.  Flu vaccinations are $25 for faculty and staff and are administered at various locations across campus for your convenience.  For more information, call 644-6230. Click here for scheduled locations.

Tips to Prevent Cold and Flu

  • Wash Your Hands
Cold and flu germs can live for hours -- in some cases weeks -- only to be picked up by someone who touches an object touched by a sick person.

  • Use a Tissue
Don't cover your sneezes and coughs with your hands or you can easily spread germs to others
  • Don't Touch Your Face
Cold and flu viruses enter your body through the eyes, nose, or mouth.
  • Drink Plenty of Fluids
Water flushes your system, washing out the poisons as it hydrates you. A typical, healthy adult needs eight 8-ounce glasses of fluids each day.
  • Get Fresh Air
A regular dose of fresh air is important, especially in cold weather when central heating dries you out and makes your body more vulnerable to cold and flu viruses.
  • Do Aerobic Exercise Regularly
Aerobic exercise help increase the body's natural virus-killing cells.
  • Eat lots of Fruits and Vegetables
Foods such as dark green, red, and yellow vegetables and fruits are a great source of vitamins that boost your immune system
  • Don't Smoke
Statistics show that heavy smokers get more severe colds and more frequent ones. Even being around smoke profoundly zaps the immune system. Smoke dries out your nasal passages and paralyzes cilia
  • Cut Alcohol & Caffeine Consumption
Caffeine and alcoholic beverages will dehydrate you and slow your recovery.  Also, heavy alcohol use destroys the liver, the body's primary filtering system, which means that germs of all kinds won't leave your body as fast.
  • Relax
There's evidence that when you put your relaxation skills into action, your interleukins -- leaders in the immune system response against cold and flu viruses -- increase in the bloodstream.

When Should You See a Doctor for a Cold or the Flu?

  • Difficultly breathing, wheezing or chest pain
  • Persistent fever
  • Vomiting or inability to keep fluids down
  • Severe pain when swallowing / Painful swelling of neck glands
  • Persistent coughing with production of discolored mucus
  • Persistent severe congestion
  • Discolored or bloody mucus from nasal passages
  • Severe headaches
  • White patches on or severely red throat
  • Pain or tenderness around the eyes
