To address the unique demands
of college healthcare and education, the American College
Health Association (ACHA) initiated Healthy Campus 2010:
Making it Happen. Healthy Campus 2010 was built on the momentum
and ideas of the Healthy People 2010 program, a national
effort and prevention “blueprint” to improve
the health of all individuals and communities. Using data
gathered from the Spring 2000 National College Assessment,
Healthy Campus 2010 includes planning guidelines and more
than 200 health objectives with baselines and targets for
college campuses to achieve.
|
| FSU is part of the national Healthy
Campus 2010 initiative to help students achieve long-term
wellness. Healthy Campus 2010 provides the opportunity and
framework for different departments, faculty, and students
of FSU to implement an integrated approach to create a healthy
campus community. These changes can be facilitated through
a combination of efforts to enhance awareness, change behavior,
and create environments that support sound health practices.
The public health model focuses on prevention through health
promotion, recognizing that health-related behaviors are
influenced by a number of factors including individual, institutional,
and community. Using the Healthy Campus 2010 guidelines for assessing
campus needs, and then developing, implementing and evaluating
programs, FSU can achieve the two overarching goals of
Healthy Campus 2010: increase quality and years of life
and eliminate health disparities in our FSU community.
Healthy Campus 2010 was adopted as an FSU Division of Student
Affairs strategic goal with the following specific goals
for the FSU campus:
- Decrease the proportion of students who drink and drive
- Increase the proportion of students who receive information
on nutrition and physical activity
- Increase condom
use by sexually active students
- Reduce illness, disability,
and death related to tobacco use and exposure to secondhand
smoke
- Increase awareness and prevention
of cancer (through participation in the American Cancer
Society’s
Relay for Life event), HIV/AIDS, diabetes, high cholesterol,
hypertension, physical
and sexual assault, eating disorders and general health
and wellness
