information), FSU Today, KARMA, THE
LOC, STRIKE, SUNN, RENEW,
and BBTHM dedicated to increasing awareness
of college wellness issues.
If you are interested in becoming a peer health educator, come
to the Health Promotion Department of Thagard Student Health
Center, located on the fourth floor, to pick up an application.

FSU
Today
For Sexual Understanding Today
FSU Today is a fun and interactive peer education organization
aimed at heightening awareness of sexual health issues
affecting college students. As volunteers, FSU Today
members inform their peers about contraception and the
prevention of sexually transmitted infections and work
to increase overall knowledge about sexual health issues
in an inclusive and non-judgmental way. Members also
sponsor local participation in a number of national events
such as World AIDS Day and Condom Awareness Week. These
events are designed to promote responsible decision-making
and educate students on important health-related topics.

KARMA
Knowing About Responsible Management of Alcohol & Other Drugs
KARMA, a group of specially trained peer educators,
inform others about the responsibilities and risks associated
with drinking and the dangers of drug use. KARMA is affiliated
with BACCHUS & GAMMA Peer Education Network, an international
association of college and university based peer education
programs focusing on alcohol abuse prevention and other
related student health and safety issues. KARMA’s
goals include: dispelling myths and increasing students’ knowledge
of alcohol and other drug facts; promoting responsible
decision-making regarding the use of alcohol; challenging
students to think about their behaviors; and encouraging
them to seek help for drug and alcohol problems.

THE
LOC
Total Health Empowerment for Ladies of Color
THE LOC is a peer education and advocacy group focused
on increased awareness of health and wellness issues
that impact women of color on campus. THE LOC aims to
be the driving force in education and policy-change to
ensure the healthcare needs of minority women are met
along with those of the wider campus community. By hosting
cultural events such as the FSU Ethnic Food Fair and
Confronting HIV through the Arts, informational sessions,
self defense workshops, and stress relief seminars, members
of THE LOC work to ensure that the physical, mental,
spiritual, and social health concerns of all women are
addressed.

STRIKE
Student Tobacco Reform Initiative: Knowledge for Eternity
STRIKE is a state-wide peer education program whose
members work to develop student-led, student-focused
initiatives to promote tobacco awareness and policy change
through interesting activities. STRIKE members participate
in large national events such as the Great American Smoke-Out,
which takes place each November, to educate their peers
on the harmful effects of long-term tobacco use. In the
future, STRIKE seeks to increase the prevalence of tobacco
cessation programs and change state university policies
to ensure that all of Florida’s campuses become
tobacco-free.

SUNN
Students for Understanding Nutrition Now
SUNN peer educators present sound and practical information
about nutrition, physical activity, and body acceptance
to the campus community. Through health fairs, presentations,
special events, and other collaborative efforts with
various campus departments, SUNN members assist in preventing
nutrition-related health problems (including eating disorders,
obesity, and poor nutrient intake), which threaten students’ success,
and inform students of the many health and wellness resources
available to them on campus. SUNN also is involved proactively
in implementing campus-wide changes to help make FSU
a leader among healthy universities nationwide.

Realizing Everyone's Need for Emotional Wellness
RENEW (Realizing
Everyone’s Need for Emotional Wellness) is
a peer education group sponsored by the University
Counseling Center and Thagard Student Health Center.
The mission of RENEW is to promote positive emotional
health and teach life skills in the areas of stress
management, self-esteem, and healthy relationships.

Building Blocks for the Total Health of Men
BBTHM (Building
Blocks for the Total Health of Men) is
a brand new Health Promotion group. BBTHM aims to
help students feel comfortable discussing issues
related to college lifestyle choices and men's health.
BBTHM helps empower college men to take control of
their physical, mental, spiritual and social health.
