University and college health centers are often the topic of many on-campus rumors and myths. And, Thagard Student Health Center is no exception. Here are a few of the most common myths about TSHC and the truths behind each one of them.

MYTH: Female patients are always harassed about being pregnant.

TRUTH: Do you think you may be pregnant? Questions like these may sound intrusive, but they are necessary to rule out certain conditions in order to give a proper diagnosis. Also, some treatments, such as antibiotics or X-Rays, can negatively impact a pregnancy. Your safety is our first priority and the clinicians at TSHC put forth great effort to offer compassionate care and information to students.

MYTH: Student health centers don't have real doctors.

TRUTH: FSU actively recruits talented physicians who are highly educated and licensed by the state of Florida. TSHC healthcare providers (physicians and nurse practitioners) represent many different cultures, and they are well-qualified to serve our diverse student population. MYTH: Patients are often misdiagnosed.

TRUTH: On occasion, a patient's symptoms are not clear in the earliest stages of an illness, which is why the clinician may ask you to return in a few days to see if symptoms persist or worsen in order to prevent a misdiagnosis. Many illnesses start as viruses and then become more serious infections, such as a sinus infection. Also, remember, good communication between clinicians and patients is vital, so be honest. If necessary, TSHC clinicians will not hesitate to refer a student to a specialist when needed or when they are uncertain of a diagnosis in order to ensure that students receive the appropriate care as quickly as possible.

MYTH: We’ll give out antibiotics to anyone who walks in the door.

TRUTH: Antibiotics are only prescribed if there is evidence of a bacterial infection. Many times, colds are caused by viruses, which are not affected by antibiotics.

MYTH: All they do at Thagard Student Health Center is treat sick students.

TRUTH: In addition to treating patients with illness or injury, TSHC provides athletic physical exams, women’s health services, STI and HIV testing, nutrition counseling, smoking cessation programs, just to name a few. Also, through our health promotion department, we provide a variety of outreach programs on health issues ranging from responsible alcohol use to emotional well-being.
